Laminated Glass Vs Tempered Glass
Laminated Glass Vs Tempered Glass NYC

When choosing glass for your facility's windows and doors, it is worth considering the pros and cons of laminate vs. tempered glass. Both are highly resistant and commonly referred to as safety glass. However, there are some differences that determine the correct use of one or the other.

To begin with, we can clarify that the manufacturing method is totally different. While tempered glass consists of a piece of monolithic glass that subsequently undergoes thermal processes of heat and cold; laminated glass consists of the union of 2 pieces of monolithic glass sandwiched with a sheet of PVB, EVA, Resin.

This makes laminated glass more resistant than tempered glass, however there are some applications in which the latter fits better. But let's take a closer look at these differences below.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass panels, windows and doors are considered very safe; they do not break easily, which helps reduce the risk of damage from flying glass. They are very effective in preventing break-ins and burglaries, as breaking a laminated window requires considerable effort, with a lot of noise.

Laminated windows even offer some level of protection against minor explosions. Finally, for installations in high traffic or noisy areas, laminated windows can offer very good soundproofing that varies depending on the qualities of the laminated material.

Tempered glass

Tempered glass shatters completely when more force is applied to it. This is the reason why motor vehicle windshields are made of laminated glass instead of tempered glass. Laminated glass does not shatter when broken.

It is not possible to resize or cut tempered glass, as it will only damage the tempered glass. It may cause the glass to break into small pieces. Waviness on the surface of tempered glass is a problem in the manufacture of thin film solar cells. These ripples are caused during the flattening process by the rollers. To solve this problem, the float glass process is used which provides sheets with flat, parallel surfaces with tempered glass.

The benefits of tempered glass outweigh its disadvantages and it is advisable to use tempered glass when necessary due to its toughened nature.

Laminated glass applications.

  • Vehicle windshields
  • High traffic walking surfaces
  • Steps
  • Building facades
  • Handrails without hardware
  • Armored doors...

Tempered glass applications.

  • Shower cabins
  • Hinged doors with hardware
  • Screens for cell phones...

Another important point to take into account is the color; in tempered glass will be the tone that has at the time of the thermal process, but in the laminated depending on the plate, ie it is easier to apply or change.
